Thanks wendy!
“I can’t be eating like this. I can’t be drinking like this. And I definitely need to do something before I turn into the jelly doughnut I had for breakfast.”
An inch here, a pound there, a pain everywhere, what the heck is going on? Welcome to the Midyears.
So what do we do just lay down and accept it or fight it with everything we have?
The body changes as we get older. Our set-point, you know the point where we can’t even look at food because if we do we will be wearing it in the morning? It changes a bit at 30, a lot at 40, 50 you are screwed, and usually by 60 you give up.
The culprit? Muscle mass. After 30, you begin to lose 3%-8% per decade and past 60, the numbers skyrocket. So then what? You begin to lose muscle mass, strength, increased risks of falls and vulnerability to injury and, consequently, this can lead to functional dependence and disability.
Start working out for 5 minutes, before your brain wakes up.
Oh yeah, and in case I forget to mention it, according to Tinetti ME, Williams CS. Falls, who wrote “injuries due to falls, and the risk of admission to a nursing home,” a decrease in muscle mass is also accompanied by a progressive increase in fat mass and consequently changes in body composition, and is associated with an increased incidence of insulin resistance in the elderly.
Other than that, getting old is great.
Turn down the volume of your “itty bitty shitty” committee!
Here is the good news. You have time to change that and as my husband says, the most beautiful women in the world are ones in their middle years who take care of their bodies and their minds. Thanks John!
So how do you start? From the beginning. You have to turn the volume of your “itty bitty shitty” committee down and commit to getting out of bed earlier, 10 minutes…..come on we can all do that. Your first step? Start working out for 5 minutes, BEFORE YOUR BRAIN WAKES UP. The point is to reconnect with you. Feel good about yourself. Reward yourself immediately after with a nice warm cup of coffee. It all starts somewhere. Start with 5 minutes and I promise you, forget about how long you are exercising, if you are consistent, it will change the rest of your life.
Okay, wendy. i’m signing up. Anyone else out there going to join me?
